July 10, 2013 | The new trucking Hours of Service Final Rule went into effect this month. Are you implementing these changes with your drivers?

Here is a summary of the changes:

      – The maximum average work week for truck drivers is 70 hours (this has decreased from 82 hours)

      – Truck drivers who reach a maximum of 70 driving hours within a week are allowed to resume work if they rest for 34 consecutive hours (including at least two nights) when their body clocks demand sleep the most (1:00 AM – 5:00 AM)

      – Truck drivers are required to take a 30-miute break during the first 8 hours of their shift

      – Trucking companies and passenger carriers that allow drivers to exceed driving limits by 3 or more hours can be fined $11,000 per offense. (Drivers could face civil penalties of up to $2,750)

      – The current 11-hour daily driving limit and 14-hour work day has been upheld
