The “Orange Book”
If you haven’t heard already, The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s (PHMSA) Office of Hazardous Materials Safety (OHMS) will be holding a public meeting to solicit input on the development of the 2020 Edition of the “Orange Book,†otherwise known as the ERG (Emergency Response Guide).

The meeting will be held June 17, 2019 in Washington DC at the US DOT Conference Center at 1200 New Jersey Ave, SE, Washington DC from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

SPECIFIC TOPICS COVERED:
- Methodology for determining the appropriate response distances for poisonous vapors.
- Outcomes of field experiments and ongoing research efforts on airborne toxic gas concentrations.
- New methodologies and considerations for future editions of the ERG.

The Orange book or ERG, is a first line of defense for emergency response personnel, transporters, and hazmat shippers who may need to respond to hazardous materials transportation incidents. It’s a quick reference guide that helps you identify, respond, and manage the incident for the first fifteen minutes to an hour. It comes in a small book form or electronically through the App store on your phone making it easier to always be prepared!
