Reminder!
Don’t Forget to Mark Your Calendars
It seems like it was just last month we were letting certain air shippers know the 63rd Edition of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) would be affecting some shippers of certain lithium batteries. Can you believe we are already at the halfway mark of the 3-month transition period (April 1, 2022)?
Beginning April 1, 2022, PI 965 and PI 968 Section II will cease to exist for lithium cells and batteries transported by aircraft. These smaller watt-hour lithium ion cells and batteries, and lower lithium metal content cells and batteries must meet the conditions of PI 965 lB and PI 968 lB. Although still permitted to be packaged in strong, rigid outer packaging, additional Class 9 marks, labels and documentation will be required.
Please, be advised you must continue to adhere to other state and operator variations in relation to shipping lithium cells and batteries by air. Additional information can be found in sub-section 2.8 of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations.
While this may not seem like a big deal to some, for others, this means shippers of Section II lithium cells and batteries are now no longer exempted from the more stringent training requirements of IATA DGR 1.5. Employees will now fall under the “fully regulated” umbrella and be required to have:
- General awareness training
- Security awareness training
- Function specific training, and
- Be required to re-train once every 24 months.
With that said, if you are going to fall under these new provisions or currently fall under the fully regulated provisions, you should check out our full catalog of IATA training courses to find out which training best suits your needs.
