      Do Not Mix

They say knowledge is power, and I guess the opposite can be true as well. Sadly, a 32-year-old manager at a local Buffalo Wild Wings in Massachusetts found this out in the saddest of ways. When an employee attempted to clean the kitchen with a chlorine and bleach based cleaner known as Super 8, he was unaware that an acid based cleaner, Scale Kleen, had been spilled earlier on the floor. This mixture created a “bubbling green concoction” triggering eye and respiratory irritation, causing the employee to flee the kitchen.

That is when Ryan Baldera (the manager) sprang into action attempting to move the hazardous substance out of the kitchen with a floor squeegee and ultimately succumbing to the lethal fumes. 13 people in total were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. The restaurant had to close for a few hours while a hazmat team cleaned the area. OSHA (occupational safety and health administration) has said it is investigating whether any standards had been violated, but it could take up to six months to investigate.

If knowledge is power, where do we obtain this knowledge from? Luckily for you, here at Transportation Compliance Associates we have taken the guess work out for you. Our GHS-Hazcom training (Globally Harmonized System-Hazcom) is designed to communicate the hazards you may face on the job. When seconds matter, having the knowledge of how to respond can be priceless. Sadly, cleaning chemicals are often overlooked and thought of as harmless, but when mixed with other chemicals it can become deadly.
