Class 9 Regulated Lithium Battery Training
A lithium cell or battery is regulated as a Class 9 hazardous material when its Watt hour (Wh) rating or its lithium content exceeds specified limits and are further regulated according to how the cells and batteries are packaged (standalone, packed with equipment, or contained in equipment).
Lithium cells and batteries that are Class 9 regulated include:
- Ground (DOT, TDG, ADR), Air (IATA), and Vessel (IMDG) Shipments
- Lithium Ion Battery that exceeds 100 Wh
- Lithium Ion Cell that exceeds 20 Wh
- Lithium Metal Battery that exceeds 2 grams of lithium
- Lithium MetalCell that exceeds 1 gram of lithium
- Air Shipments
- All standalone cell and battery packages (a package does not contain equipment powered by the cells or batteries)

Lithium Battery Exceptions Training
DOT 49CFR §173.185(c) US ground shipments, TDG Special Provision 34, and IATA, IMDG, and ADR Special Provision 188
Lithium cells, batteries, and shipments are provided exceptions from Class 9 regulations but must meet Watt hour (Wh) rating and/or lithium content limitations and package limitations based on weight and how they are packaged (standalone, packed with equipment, or contained in equipment).
Lithium cells and batteries that are provided exceptions include:
- Ground (DOT, TDG, ADR), Air (IATA), and Vessel (IMDG) Shipments
- Lithium Ion Battery that is 100 Wh or less
- Lithium Ion Cell that is 20 Wh or less
- Lithium Metal Battery that contains 2 grams of lithium or less
- Lithium MetalCell that is 1 grams of lithium or less
- Air Shipments
- Cell/battery weight limits apply to each package
- All standalone cell and battery packages are Class 9 regulated (a package does not contain equipment powered by the cells or batteries)
