      USPS: Publication 52 Amendments

      • Categories Uncategorized
      • Date February 4, 2025

      FINAL RULE

Applicability took effect January 19, 2025, with and effective date of January 27, 2025, the United States Postal Service (USPS) published its final rule amending Publication 52, Hazardous, Restricted, and Perishable Mail by adding new section 131 to require specific outer packaging when mailing most HAZMATs and dangerous goods (DG), remove quantity restrictions for nonregulated toxic materials, and remove lithium battery mark telephone requirements. The USPS now requires mailers to ship all hazmat and DG in what they define as “rigid outer packaging” that meet specific strength requirements. In case you were wondering what the USPS defines as rigid:

“Rigid means unable to bend or be forced out of shape; not flexible. Rigid outer packaging is generally interpreted to mean a fiberboard (cardboard) box or outer packaging of equivalent strength, durability, and rigidity. See 131.”
