DOT General Awareness & Security Training For Bulk Shipments – 49CFR

DOT requires all employees who affect transportation to be instructed in General Awareness and Security Awareness training, and to be certified by their employer to perform their duties. Additional function specific and safety training are also required. This training meets the requirements of 49CFR, Part 172, Subpart H for DOT General Awareness and Security Awareness training.

  • General Awareness
    • Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) – Introduction to DOT regulations and what constitutes a hazardous material (HazMat).
    • 9 Hazard Classes – Identification and understanding of the 9 DOT hazard classes 
      • Class 1 – Explosives
        Materials capable of causing explosions or rapid chemical reactions (e.g., fireworks, blasting agents).
      • Class 2 – Gases
        Compressed, liquefied, or dissolved gases such as propane, oxygen, or aerosols.
      • Class 3 – Flammable Liquids
        Liquids that can ignite easily (e.g., gasoline, alcohol, paint).
      • Class 4 – Flammable Solids
        Solids that ignite easily, self‑react, or emit flammable gas when exposed to water.
      • Class 5 – Oxidizers & Organic Peroxides
        Materials that can intensify fires or cause combustion by releasing oxygen.
      • Class 6 – Toxic & Infectious Substances
        Materials harmful or fatal if inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through skin.
      • Class 7 – Radioactive Materials
        Substances that emit ionizing radiation and require specialized handling.
      • Class 8 – Corrosive Materials
        Chemicals that can destroy skin, metals, or other materials (e.g., acids, bases).
      • Class 9 – Miscellaneous Hazardous Materials
        Materials that present hazards during transport but don’t fit other classes (e.g., lithium batteries, dry ice).
    • Hazardous Materials Table (49 CFR 172.101)

      The Hazardous Materials Table (HMT) is the primary reference for identifying and shipping hazardous materials correctly.

      The table is used to determine:

      • Proper Shipping Name
      • UN or NA Identification Number
      • Hazard Class or Division
      • Packing Group (I = high danger, II = medium danger, III = low danger)
      • Authorized Packaging
      • Special provisions and handling requirements

      Anyone involved in shipping must know how to use this table to ensure the shipment is properly classified, packaged, marked, and labeled.

      Training on using the table to identify proper shipping names, UN/ID numbers, hazard classes, packing groups, and packaging requirements.

The training covers 49cfr §172.704 sub part h training requirements. 

  • Anyone who is part of the pre-transportation functions. i.e., Anyone who classifies the shipment, fills out or signs the shipping paper, marks, labels, fills, secures, or packages pick out the packaging, placards, or provide the placards to the driver.

If you perform any pre‑transportation function, this training is required by DOT.

You have a year to use the code to access the training. 

You can stop and start and go back to where you left off in the training. You do not have to complete it all at once.

You have an unlimited amount of times to take the final test. You can also retrake the training if needed. 

Our webinars are live webinars conducted by an instructor over the computer using a webinar software. Our webinars are private to you and/or your trainees. We setup a date and time that works for both you and our instructor. Our webinars are conducted Monday – Friday. Saturdays are at an additional cost.

Our webinars do not have a limit to how many people. We can do a webinar for one person or more.

We provide LMS training modules of our online computer based training to clients by dispatching it to their learning management system. We can customize the training or even provide provide our standard training for you. We can customize the content to a few of the hazards you are shipping. We would need you to provide the SDS’s of the hazmats that you are shipping and the quantities you are shipping them in. From there we will customize the content to what you are shipping, so the training is relevent to what you are shipping.
