      The “Orange Book”

If you haven’t heard already, The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s (PHMSA) Office of Hazardous Materials Safety (OHMS) will be holding a public meeting to solicit input on the development of the 2020 Edition of the “Orange Book,” otherwise known as the ERG (Emergency Response Guide).

      WHERE:

The meeting will be held June 17, 2019 in Washington DC at the US DOT Conference Center at 1200 New Jersey Ave, SE, Washington DC from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

      REGISTER:

To pre-register complete the form at HERE.

To use the conference “call-in” and “live meeting” function, specifics on how to do so will be available HERE once posted.

      SPECIFIC TOPICS COVERED:

      1. Methodology for determining the appropriate response distances for poisonous vapors.
      2. Outcomes of field experiments and ongoing research efforts on airborne toxic gas concentrations.
      3. New methodologies and considerations for future editions of the ERG.

If you’re unsure of what the orange book is and why it’s important, you can click HERE for a summary straight from the Federal Register, or continue reading for a down and dirty on the Orange Book. The Orange book or ERG, is a first line of defense for emergency response personnel, transporters, and hazmat shippers who may need to respond to hazardous materials transportation incidents. It’s a quick reference guide that helps you identify, respond, and manage the incident for the first fifteen minutes to an hour. It comes in a small book form or electronically through the App store on your phone making it easier to always be prepared!

Speaking of being prepared, if you want to stay up-to-date with the ever-changing world of hazardous materials transportation, make sure to follow us on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. You can also find us at learnhazmat.com or contact us at (724) 899-4100 and one of our team members will be waiting to help you achieve all your compliance and safety goals!
