      Revision 7

Recently released on May 20, 2024, The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released its final rule updating and revising the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) to align more with the 7th Revision of the Globally Harmonized System for Classifying and Labeling Chemicals (GHS). Although the changes take effect July 19, 2024, those subject to the OSHA HazCom regulations will have staggered compliance dates.

      • Chemical manufacturers, importers, distributors, and employers who evaluate:
        •  Substances- will have until January 19, 2026
        • Mixtures- will have until July 19, 2027

It should be noted that both will have extended dates (6 months) past the dates mentioned above to update any alternative workplace labeling, provide additional training, and update their Hazcom program to align with the revisions. Some of the notable changes listed in OSHA’s final rule include:

      1. New labeling provisions for small containers.
      2. New provisions related to trade secrets.
      3. Technical amendments related to the contents of safety data sheets (SDSs).
      4. Revised criteria for classification of certain health and physical hazards.
      5. Revisions to definitions of terms used in the standard.
      6. Updates to Bulk Chemical shipment labeling.
