Would You Like To Go Paperless?

Do you ever get those emails, notifications, or prompts from any of your financial institutions or bill payment systems that read “would you like to go paperless?” Apparently, the Department of Transportation (DOT) Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) does. In a recent Request For Information (RFI) released on July 11, 2022, PHMSA is seeking input on the use of electronic communications as an alternative for current paper based communications for the following types of “hazard communications”:

      • Shipping papers
      • Train Consists
      • Dangerous Goods Manifests
      • Notifications to The Pilot in Command
      • Emergency Response Information
      • Administrative documents:
        • DOT Special Permits, Approvals, and Registrations

PHMSA cites its reasoning for inquiry to the widely adopted technological advances in which could help

“…supplement or replace the existing paper-based hazard communication system, and offer opportunities for improved emergency response and oversight, as well as increased efficiency in the operations of transportation networks.”

For a deeper dive into the RFI and to see a list of questions PHMSA seeks input on click HERE NOW! Keep in mind you have until September 10, 2022 to comment on the proposed questions and let your voice be heard.
