Power Industrial Trucks
Notice of Proposed Rulemaking Alert
On February 16, 2022, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
recommended revisions to the current design and construction standards of power industrial trucks (forklifts).
OSHA’s general Industry power industrial truck standard can be found in 29 CF 1910.178. Within this standard you will find not only forklifts, but also fork trucks, tractors, platform lift trucks, motorized hand trucks, and other specialized industrial trucks powered by electric motors or internal combustion engines.
With OSHA’s intended update, it aims to do two major things:
- incorporate by reference the consensus standards found in the American National Standards Institute/Industrial Truck Standards Development Foundation (ANSI/ITSDF) and;
- Allow employers who do not use power industrial trucks constructed from the consensus standards, to demonstrate that said power industrial trucks provides at least as effective safety and protection as the national consensus standards or better.
For those of you wishing to submit comments to OSHA, they will accept your comments until May 17, 2022. While you wait on the Final Rule to be handed down, don’t forget to check out our industry leading power industrial truck offering: Forklift: Certify and Comply.
