EPA to Study Potential Health Risks of Fluoride in Drinking Water

      Make America Healthy Again

While not necessarily a regulation change as of yet, the U.S Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin announced its decision to review the potential health risks of fluorides in drinking water as part of Trumps Make America Healthy Again initiative. In case you didn’t know, under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) which limits the amount of potentially harmful substances in public drinking water systems, the current limit is 4.0 milligrams of fluoride per liter. The EPA as recently as July 2024 conducted a scientific review which was published in the National Toxicology Programs report concluding with “moderate confidence, that fluoride exposure above 1.5 milligrams per liter is associated with lower IQ in children.”

Although not an exhaustive study, the report also concluded that more research is needed to better understand the health risks associated with exposure to lower fluoride concentrations. This is partially why the EPA has stated it plans to do a thorough review and plans on an update to its fluoride drinking water standard if necessary. Some proponents of fluoride in drinking water warn of the potential health risks to lower-income residents who can’t afford dental visits. According to The American Dental Association “fluoride in drinking water has been shown to reduce tooth decay. The group said it was willing to help conduct high-quality studies to settle the issue.” If you would like to take a look at the EPA’s announcement you can click HERE NOW to read it in its entirety.
