Can you believe it’s that time of year already? We are already talking about what the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) top ten most cited violations are for the fiscal year 2023! Where did the time go? For those of you who attended this years National Safety Council (NSC) Safety Congress and Expo, you probably already know the list and who unfortunately topped the list. 10. Machine Guarding (1910.212): 1,644 Violations
9. Personal Protective and Lifesaving Equipment – Eye and Face Protection (1926.102): 2,074 Violations
8. Fall Protection– Training Requirements (1926.503): 2,112 Violations
7. Respiratory Protection (1910.134): 2,481 Violations
6. Lockout/Tagout (1910.147): 2,554 Violations
5. Powered Industrial Trucks-Forklifts (1910.178): 2,561 Violations
4. Scaffolding (1926.451): 2,859 Violations
3. Ladders (1926.1053): 2,978 Violations
2. Hazard Communication (1910.1200): 3,213 Violations
1. Fall Protection-General Requirements (1926.501): 7,271 Violations
As some of you might have noticed, Fall Protection once again took the not so top honors for the 13th year in a row with over double the next closest cited violation category. It should also be noted that it was an increase of 2,021 more violations in fiscal year 2023 which averages to roughly 5.5 more violations per day.
With Fall Protection making OSHA’s list twice, it’s surprising more emphasis is not put on getting proper fall protection training and awareness.
