An Historic First

For some Wednesday, November 9, 2022 was just another Wednesday. For others, it marked an historic first in the long history of female truck drivers. The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) hosted it inaugural meeting of the Women of Trucking Advisory Board (WOTAB) which was formed by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Presently, women only make up approximately 7% of all truck driver even though they have over 275 years in trucking and other modes of transportation. Under the Infrastructure Law the board is comprised of 16 founding members with a focus on the recruitment, retention, support, and safety of women commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers to create a more robust and diverse industry.

To help aid the WOTAB, the FMCSA conducted the Crime Prevention for Truckers survey to better understand the obstacles both women and minorities face within the trucking industry. To no one’s surprise, the survey found that women reported facing more sexual harassment while also under reporting incidents of harassment.

It is the hope of the Biden Administration’s Trucking Action Plan that the WOTAB will play a crucial role in the recruitment and retention of more drivers, specifically women and minorities. To learn more about the WOTAB click HERE NOW!
