      “DO?”

As a special bonus to our 3-part blog series, we thought we would answer another very relevant question related to our topics and one pertinent to our current situation with COVID-19. With the recent uptick is confirmed Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations from the rapidly spreading Delta variant, many people are worried about job loss or currently still seeking new positions from the first economic shutdown. With that said, many of us are wondering:

“Do I need to re-take my hazardous materials training when I find a new job?”

The unfortunate short answer is, it depends.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires new employees to complete their hazardous materials training within the first 90 days of date of hire. There is one exception which allows for “relevant training from a previous employer or other source” provided you obtain a copy of your training certificate from the previous employer. Even still there may be some hurdles.

      1. When was the last time you took your hazmat training?
        1. Your training must have been completed within the three-year anniversary date of your initial training or most recent recurrent hazmat training.
      • Then it will depend on your employer to decide if your previous training is adequate for your new position.
        • A lot of factors can play into this question:
          • Is your position changing?
          • Are the chemicals different?
          • Is there a security plan?
          • What are the security threats?
          • Do they have different SOPs?

With all those variables, it is likely you will need some form of training, but maybe not all that is required by 49 CFR, Subpart H:

      1. General awareness
      2. Function-specific training
      3. Safety training
      4. Security awareness training
      5. In-depth security training

Ultimately the answer will be dependent on your employer. For industry leading hazardous materials training make sure you check out our training HERE.
